I Supercharged My Zettelkasten in 20 Minutes with a Simple List Note

Lockdown was a transformative time for most of us, I reckon. It certainly was for me.

Four years ago, I joined a socialist organization (Socialist Alternative) during the Bernie primary campaign. Even though Sanders bowed out without a real fight, I stayed a member because, having grown up in a suburban evangelical community, I was encountering ideas I’d never grappled with before. I was reading history, philosophy, theory, economics, and current events in quantities unprecedented for me, including college. Like millions of other workers and young people, I was participating in the George Floyd movement, observing much of what I was reading take place in real time.

It was, and I mean this positively, like drinking from a firehose.

The arduous study and discussion drove me to build a digital zettelkasten. “Most of what I’m doing is drawing connections between different historical processes,” I figured. “Surely the zettelkasten method can help with that.”
